One of the most talked about films of 2012, it’s easy to see why The Raid had so much praise heaped on it. An Indonesian action film which doubles as a loving tribute to the 80’s action classics, The Raid pulls no punches and delivers one of the most thrilling experiences of 2012. In a plot similar to the also excellent Dredd, The Raid sees a team of cops plan a daring assault on a high rise building where a crime lord is holed up. The problem is, almost everyone in this apartment block is working for him and wants the cops dead!
The excellent gunplay in the first third of the Raid is exceptionally executed, but the real treat comes when the guns are put down and the martial arts begins. Fists and feet fly, knives stab and slice, people are thrown over shoulders, through windows and walls. It’s an amazing spectacle, wonderfully choreographed and brutally violent. By the end of the film, the actors genuinely look like they’ve been several rounds with each other!
Best enjoyed with a beer and a bag of snacks, it would be easy to classify The Raid as a “lad’s” film; but, if you have any love for well crafted action, check this out. You won’t regret it!
